Rodney and Kristie have lived in McElmo Canyon for over 40 years. During the 80s through the early 2000s, they owned and operated Kelly Place Bed & Breakfast in McElmo Canyon. Canyon Trails Ranch has been offering horse rides since 1995, following its establishment in 1980.
The green fields surrounding the ranch, that you can see now, were not always there. Rodney used his team of draft horses to break out the land for hay production. Kristie, on the other hand, developed the trail ride to educate visitors about the area's rich archaeological history.
Rodney and Kristie are the proud owners of Canyon Trails Ranch. Their daughter, Jessica, and her husband, Joe, are also part of the ranch. You might even spot their adorable granddaughters running around and lending a helping hand. When you visit the ranch, you will witness the entire family working together.
Rodney and Kristie take care of the horses and manage the land, while Jessica handles bookings for rides and campsites, communicates with guests, and is the wrangler on most rides. She also happens to be an elementary school teacher. Joe is learning to be a wheelwright, saddles horses, and runs the website. He is also a teacher.
Our horses are well cared for and loved. Jessica takes care of them and ensures that they are spoiled. We believe that by treating our horses with kindness, they will do the same for us and our guests. We keep our rides small, with a maximum of 6 guests at a time, and usually only take out groups of 2 to 4 people. We want our rides to be personal and authentic. Our horses are always eager to go for a walk and stretch their legs. They are like family to us, and each horse has a unique personality that will make your ride unforgettable. Before you start your ride, make sure to ask Jessica for the horses' names so that you can get to know them better and develop a special bond as they take you on an adventure you'll never forget.
